- Install Teams & OneDrive in Citrix (Machine-Based) –

If it appears like this, you have installed a user-based install of Microsoft Teams. This should never be visible on a machine where you want to install Microsoft Teams Machine-Wide! MachineBased CleanUp. Following directories and file types should still be excluded from the profile. Excluding these items helps to reduce the size of the user profile. More information about the FSLogix Profile solution can be found in the following article. The default behavior of the Teams installation is that Teams starts automatically when a user logs in.

If this is not desired, it must be defined using Group Policy. With the current version of Teams, this intervention via GPO only works the first time Microsoft Teams is started per user. Once the user has started Microsoft Teams, Teams is automatically started again each time the session is started.

This means that Teams will not be launched automatically after installation. If Teams has already been rolled out and only the above policy is activated afterwards, two scripts for resetting the autostart flag still need to be executed in the user and machine context.

Script for user context — This only needs to be run once for the user, after the machine context script has been run. The following script can be used to define the settings from the desktop-config. Script desktop-config. You can edit this only with the script, if teams was started initially once. Only then the desktop-config. The following settings should always be configured for better performance. Register teams as the chat app for Office should be disabled for the same reason.

To permanently disable Autostart in Microsoft Teams, the following registry key should be deleted. In addition to enabling this policy, HDX checks whether the Citrix Workspace app version is equal to or greater than the minimum required version.

This can also be activated manually via registry key on the worker. This may be necessary when using newer VDA versions in conjunction with older controller versions e. On the client you can check this via the Task Manager. The process HdxRtcEngine. The worker should be running the WebSocketAgent.

The standard installation that the user can perform via the Microsoft portal is a user-based installation of OneDrive. This is only recommended in the Citrix environment for desktop operating systems Pooled or Personal Desktop. In order for OneDrive to work in server operating systems multi-user capable , the Machine Based Installer must be used. This mode is recommended for non-persistent environments.

We can perform the complete installation with the correct parameters , of course, script operated. The better profile solution in combination with Microsoft OneDrive for Business is FSLogix, because here not only the installation files, but also the user data are persistently stored without extended login times.

The default behavior of the OneDrive installation is to allow the user to synchronize the entire OneDrive account to the local machine up to 1 TB. These and other settings are only possible under Windows Server and Windows 10 version or newer , as Files On Demand is only available then.

With older operating systems, the complete OneDrive data is always downloaded. However, for a non-persistent setup, Teams requires a per-machine installation in order to work efficiently. See the Non-persistent setup section. With per-machine installation, automatic updates are disabled. This means that to update the Teams app, you must uninstall the current version to update to a newer version. With per-user installation, automatic updates are enabled.

Keep the Teams desktop app in your VDI environment up to date. Teams desktop app versions with release dates that are more than 90 days older than the current version's release date aren't supported. Unsupported Teams desktop app versions show a blocking page to users and request that they update their app.

For most VDI deployments, we recommend you deploy Teams using per-machine installation. To update to the latest Teams version, start with the uninstall procedure followed by latest Teams version deployment. For Teams AV optimization in VDI environments to work properly, the thin-client device must have access to the internet. If internet access isn't available at the thin-client device, optimization startup won't be successful. This means that the user is in a non-optimized media state.

In a dedicated persistent setup, users' local operating system changes are retained after users log off. For persistent setup, Teams supports both per-user and per-machine installation. In a non-persistent setup, users' local operating system changes are not retained after users log off.

Such setups are commonly shared multi-user sessions. VM configuration varies based on the number of users and available physical server resources. For a non-persistent setup, the Teams desktop app must be installed per-machine to the golden image. This ensures an efficient launch of the Teams app during a user session. Using Teams in a non-persistent setup also requires a profile-caching manager for efficient Teams runtime data synchronization. Efficient data synchronization ensures that the appropriate user-specific information such as a user's data, profile, or settings is cached during the user's session.

Make sure data in these two folders are synced:. A roaming folder or, if you are using folder redirection, a caching manager is required to ensure that the Teams app has the runtime data and files required to run the application. This is necessary to mitigate network latency issues or network glitches, which would otherwise cause application errors and a slow experience due to unavailable data and files.

There are a variety of caching manager solutions available, such as FSLogix. Consult your caching manager provider for specific configuration instructions.

Excluding these items helps reduce the user caching size to further optimize your non-persistent setup. Before you deploy Teams through Microsoft Apps for enterprise, you must first uninstall any pre-existing Teams apps if they were deployed using per-machine installation. Teams through Microsoft Apps for enterprise is installed per-user. Teams is also being added to existing installations of Microsoft Apps for enterprise.

If media optimizations loaded, the audio devices and cameras available locally will be enumerated in the device menu. If the menu shows Remote audio , quit the Teams app and try again. If the devices still don't appear in the menu, check the Privacy settings on your local PC.

Disconnect from the remote session, then reconnect and check the audio and video devices again. To join calls and meetings with video, you must also grant permission for apps to access your camera. Using Teams in a virtualized environment is different from using Teams in a non-virtualized environment. For more information about the limitations of Teams in virtualized environments, check out Teams for Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure. For Teams known issues that aren't related to virtualized environments, see Support Teams in your organization.

To contact Microsoft Teams support, go to the Microsoft admin center. Customizing a host pool's Remote Desktop Protocol RDP properties, such as multi-monitor experience or enabling microphone and audio redirection, lets you deliver an optimal experience for your users based on their needs.

Enabling device redirections isn't required when using Teams with media optimization. If you're using Teams without media optimization, set the following RDP properties to enable microphone and camera redirection:.

After Teams is installed, it's automatically updated approximately every two weeks with new features and quality updates. This update process for Teams is different than the update process for the other Office apps, such as Word and Excel. For more information, see Teams update process. If you're using Version If you don't want Teams included as part of the installation, there is an Office suite install package available that doesn't include Teams.

You can also use the install packages for individual applications, such as Word or Excel. For links to the most current install packages, see Update history for Office for Mac.

Some Office plans include Microsoft Apps, but don't include the Teams service. Even if a plan doesn't include the Teams service, Teams will still be installed with Microsoft Apps, as described earlier in this article. To prevent Teams from being installed, follow the steps outlined earlier in this article. For Office plans that don't include the Teams service, a free trial version of Teams that's valid for 1 year is available. Your users can start using it when they sign in to Teams.

For more information about this free trial version and providing your users access to it, see Manage the Microsoft Teams Commercial Cloud Trial offer.

The manner in which this is accomplished will vary depending on the VPN product and machine platform used but most VPN solutions will allow some simple configuration of policy to apply this logic.

For more information on VPN platform-specific split tunnel guidance, see this Microsoft article. Citrix minimum recommendations per user are:. About performance, encoding is more expensive than decoding for CPU use at the client machine. You can hardcode the maximum encoding resolution in the Citrix Workspace app for Linux and Windows. See Encoder performance estimator and Optimization for Microsoft Teams.

If you configure an explicit proxy server in the VDA and route connections to localhost through a proxy, redirection fails. If not, optimization fails. If the branch office is configured to access the internet through a proxy, these versions support proxy servers:. If DNS requests are unsuccessful, P2P calls with outside users and conference calls media establishment fails.

This support means that the endpoint must be able to perform DNS resolutions. Consider a scenario where there is no direct path between the two peers or between a peer and a conference server and you are joining a multi-party call or meeting. The HdxRtcEngine. These ranges include both Transport Relays and media processors, front-ended by an Azure Load Balancer.

Call quality depends on the underlying network protocol. Meetings fail. Use this architecture diagram as a visual reference for the call flow sequence. The corresponding steps are indicated in the diagram. Citrix media engine and Teams. With Direct Routing, you connect your own supported session border controller to the Microsoft Phone System directly without any additional on-premises software.

Call queues, transfer, forward, hold, mute, and resume a call are supported. Starting with version , Citrix Workspace app supports dynamic emergency calling.

The notification is provided based on the current location of the Citrix Workspace app that runs on the endpoint, instead of the Microsoft Teams client that runs on the VDA. To enable dynamic emergency calling, the administrator must use the Microsoft Teams Admin Center and configure the following to create a network or emergency location map:. When users start an optimized call using the Microsoft Teams client for the first time, they might notice a warning with the Windows firewall settings.

The warning asks for users to allow communication for HdxTeams. You can apply more restrictive rules if you want. You can deploy Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business side by side as two separate solutions with overlapping capabilities.

For more information, see Understand Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business coexistence and interoperability. Examples include island modes and Skype for Business with Microsoft Teams collaboration. Also, Skype for Business with Microsoft Teams collaboration and meetings.

Peripheral access can be granted only to a single application at the time. For example, webcam access by the RealTime Media Engine during a call locks the imaging device during a call. When the device is released, it becomes available for Microsoft Teams.

Optimal audio and video quality require a network connection to the Microsoft cloud that has low latency, low jitter, and low packet loss. Backhauling of Microsoft Teams audio-video RTP traffic from Citrix Workspace app users at branch office locations to a data center before going to the internet can add excessive latency.

It might also cause congestion on WAN links. This use is to identify, categorize, and steer Microsoft Teams traffic. Business broadband internet connections in many areas suffer from intermittent packet loss, periods of excessive jitter, and outages.

You can use multiple meetings or chat windows for Microsoft Teams in Windows. This feature is supported with Citrix Workspace app for Windows Microsoft Teams supports Gallery , Large gallery , and Together mode layouts. Microsoft Teams displays a 2x2 grid with video streams of four participants known as Gallery. In this case, Microsoft Teams sends four video streams to the client device for decoding.

When more than four participants share video, only the last four most active speakers appear on the screen. Microsoft Teams also provides the large gallery view with a grid up to 7x7. As a result, the Microsoft Teams conference server composites a single video feed and sends it to the client device for decoding, resulting in lower CPU consumption.

Lastly, Microsoft Teams supports Together mode , which is part of the new meeting experience. Using AI segmentation technology to digitally place participants in a shared background, Microsoft Teams puts all participants in the same auditorium. The user can control these modes during a conference call by selecting Gallery , Large gallery , or Together mode layouts in the ellipses menu.

Microsoft Teams relies on video-based screen sharing VBSS , effectively encoding the desktop being shared with video codecs like H and creating a high-definition stream. With HDX optimization, incoming screen sharing is treated as a video stream. Starting from Citrix Workspace app or higher for Windows, Linux or Mac, users can share their screens and video camera simultaneously.

Instead, the screen sharing video feed shows. The peer must then manually resume the camera sharing. In that case, other peers can still see your webcam and content and navigate back and forth to review other slides. In this scenario, the slides are rendered on the VDA. Outgoing screen sharing is also optimized and offloaded to Citrix Workspace app. Set specific permission in Citrix Workspace app for Mac to enable screen sharing.

For more information, see System Requirements. Citrix Workspace app minimum version is required. Starting with Citrix Workspace app for Windows To share a specific app:. Compatibility with app protection The screen sharing of a specific app is compatible with the app protection feature in HDX optimized Microsoft Teams. You can only select the Window option to share any open app.

This feature is supported in the following versions of Citrix Workspace app there is no dependency on the VDA version or Operative System, single session or multisession :. You can request control during a Microsoft Teams call when a participant is sharing the screen.

Once you have control, you can make selections, edits, or other keyboard and mouse activities to the shared screen. To take control when a screen is being shared, click Request control button in the Microsoft Teams UI.

While you have control, you can make selections, edits, and other modifications to the shared screen. For these actions, you can use both keyboard and mouse. Give and Request control are not available if the user is sharing a single app also known as App sharing. The full desktop or monitor must be shared. When optimization for Microsoft Teams is active, the Citrix Workspace app accesses the peripherals headsets, microphones, cameras, speakers, and so forth.

Microsoft Teams does not access the devices directly. Instead, it relies on the Workspace app WebRTC media engine for acquiring, capturing, and processing the media. You can store it here or you can create a share for the roaming activation tokens. Also in the example above, I have used GPOs to automatically sign in to and activate the users Office license. So yes, the user logs in and then it creates and stores the roaming activation token. Any known issues when using FsLogix on your experience?

After initial log-in, the users are prompted with Microsoft login prompts whenever they start an Officeapplication, OneDrive or Teams. Outlook is even asking twice, apparently for authentication towards the Exchange and towards Office-Licensing. Any idea on why those prompts still show up? Should I still configure a separate path for the roaming activation token?

I had the problem that the login window from the Office Apps did not appear. I was able to fix this with a logon script, but now people with MFA can no longer log in. Do you have any idea what this could be? No fix is required as this is the proper and best behaviour. Thank you for the answer, I use this script to make the login work. When I do not use the script, the Office apps freezes in Horizon after requesting the mail address.

I used this script from Microsoft for this:. Thanks for this article. The above was when opening Outlook, we were getting a prompt to have device managed by organisation.

We have one issue, which is becoming a pain point. When a user logs in for first time, they are being prompted to login to activate. There are a few blogs saying this is the norm but according to the above we should be able to skip that. Can you advice what the delete of the identity reg key and make sure its not roaming with profile bit does, that is only thing we havent applied yet and think may sort our problem.

The thing is that key appears when you start office app, so when you delete on login, dont know how that will help. For activation, as long as you configure the GPOs to auto-sign in using the users credentials, they should not be prompted.

The key is required for profile management so that it can sign-in and activate instead of preparing a warning. The identity key has computer identity specific information in it, and when logging in with different computers it needs to generate new values. That is excellent, sorted our issues and we good to go! Thanks for the article — we have one final question. When opening Edge, going to office. If the users UPN matches their e-mail, it should automatically sign in without prompting for an e-mail address.

Most of the configuration I do is via GPOs. You might have to reference the Microsoft documentation. I only need Word, PowerPoint, and Excel in my environment, no email.

Thank you for this guide, it is the most complete one I can find for VDI. Great article!
